Why does an alcoholic lie?

Christina, I have something to say:
BRAVA! For finding this on U-Tube and sending it out.

I heard Fr Martin several times, he loved to travel to Naples--in the winter, that is! And what a TRUE FRIEND of AA he is/was.

I watched all 15 episodes, and went on to the next phase of clips.

BLESS you!

I think that they lie to support their addictive behavior which they are sure others would disapprove of, and give them a hard time about.

Any questions about their alcoholism generally ends up with their rationalizing that their lying is acceptable because the one who questions is so controlling or unreasonable about their right to drink. Their sophisticated rationalizations and false justifications enable them generally to be excellent liars, hard to catch them in their lies, which for the friend/family member leaves them feeling even more distressed by the betrayal of their trust because they were "duped" and feel stupid for simply having trusted someone they love and used to know.

I learned to not buy into the put-down (alcoholics usually blame and don't own their bad behavior) or rationalizations.
